The high point so far for the means of transport was reached in the 1920s with over 3,000 systems in Europe, America and Australia. Then came tough competition from motoring. Around 1980, there were only about 300 systems left in traffic in the world. But all over the world there is now growing interest in tramways, in the modern form, which have little more than the principle of steel wheels against steel rails in common with the original tramway. The number of tramways in the world has now risen to around 350 and a hundred more are currently under construction or planned.
